After a short architectural apprenticeship in Colombo, Bawa traveled again to , where he qualified as an architect in 1957, aged 38. Lacking the technical skills one requires for architectural design, Bawa apprenticed with a local architectural practice in Colombo for a year, before returning to England to study at the Architectural Association of London.
